In November, all of Thailand celebrates Loi Krathong, an event that is both visually stunning and culturally significant. The Tourism Authority of Thailand has announced that the country-wide celebrations of the 2022 Loi Krathong festival would take place in the first week of November, inviting visitors to enjoy the country’s beauty, charm, and culture.
Loi Krathong, one of Thailand’s biggest and most beautiful annual celebrations and takes place during the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar’s full moon, so the event will be held on Tuesday November 8th this year. This yearly festival is celebrated all around the world and is also known as the Festival of Lights and the Floating Lantern Festival.
Loi means “float” in Thai and Krathong means “container, boat, or vessel,” therefore during this festival, people release krathongs onto the water while adorning them with candles and flowers. For Thais, doing this will bring them good fortune and great emotions while banishing any negative energy they may be experiencing.
Along with Loi Krathong, the people of Northern Thailand celebrate the Yi Peng Festival, during which they release lanterns into the night sky. Hundreds of krathongs, lit by candles, float on the water and colorful lanterns rise into the sky, making for a beautiful scene.
